Grace for your spirit April 11, 2008

Grace for your spirit
The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' Luke 18:11-12

This is an example of a person who trusts in himself and views other with contempt. This is a person who is not praying to God at all, but rather to himself. This man is one who is completely happy with his life and really wants nothing but congratulations. Can our prayers be like this? Oh, we ask God to open our hearts, minds, and shape our lives, but do we mean it? Are we really saying, bless us, but don’t change our minds about anything because we’re already right? Bless us, but don’t give us any work to do because we already busy? Bless us, but don’t challenge our giving because we’re broke? Bless us, because we are better than most? When we pray like this, we will come away with nothing from God.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit
Philippians 4:23
