Grace for your spirit
Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles. Proverb 24:17

Do you know anyone that has no sense of humor? They never laugh at a joke or a cartoon, but when they see someone they don’t like slip and fall, they laugh and laugh. What is it about pain in others that give us joy? God calls us to love our enemies. To wish the best for those who persecute us. It is a wrong attitude that harbors grudges against those who cause us trouble, and secretly hope something bad will happen to them. When we start rejoicing when our enemies stand, and are glad when they achieve, perhaps they will no long be our enemy. Let’s ask God to cleanse our spirits so we have a right attitude about everyone.

And he got up and came to his father. But while he was a long way, his father saw him, and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him, and kissed him. Lk 15:20

The faithful father in this story of the prodigal son, had to watch his son rebel and run off. While his son was away on the pig pin trail, his father waited for his rebellion to end. The father couldn’t chase the son down the trail, nor join him in the pig pin. The father kept the home fires burning, with a ring, a robe, sandals, and a fattened calf, waiting for his son to come to his senses. The father could do the more good for his son being faithful, than sharing the pig pin experience with him. When we face such separation from any loved one, we need to pray that they will come to their senses and return to faithfulness. Our own faithfulness will be the "lower lights" that help them get home.

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "You are Simon, the son of John; you shall be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). John 1:42

Many times in Bible history we see people getting name changes. Most of these name changes came to change the identity of a person who has a great job to do. So it was with this man. Simon was going to be called into the inner circle with Jesus. He would need to cut his ties with the past, and be a new man for Christ. Jesus changed his name to "a rock". He certainly would face many challenges, and he would have to be a rock. When we are called out of the world, washed in the blood of the Lamb, God gives us a new name too. With Christ in us, we wear the name Christian. Let’s make it our life’s goal to change our life, and live up to the name we have been given.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, "Here am I. Send me! Isaiah 6:8

Isaiah the prophet had a life-changing experience. He stood for the throne of God confessing that he was a ruined and sinful man. Then he received the cleansing forgiveness from the touch of God. God needed a someone to proclaim His truth to a sinful people. There was no one else qualified to make His call to the people, except one who had experienced it already. The same call is given today to Christians to go to a lost and dying world. Who can go lead others in the way of salvation, except the ones who have experienced it? God still calls for us saying, "Who will go for Us?"

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household. Ephesians 2:19

The word church comes from a word that literally means "called out" Christians are called out of the world. Called out to be dependent on Christ and other Christians. Called out to develop our spiritual lives, and sustain them until the end. Most of the time when the word church is used in the Bible, it refers to individual local congregations. Our place is with the other saints of God, and members in God’s household. We should not be strangers nor aliens, living in obscurity. God calls us out to worship and encourage one another. Can you be just as good a Christian at home alone. NO! Let’s not make our own rules to suit us. Let’s yield the direction of the Lord. Let’s get together

But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. John 4:23

A mom was trying to get her son out of bed to go to church, but the son was resisting. The son said, "Today my spirit will go to church, but my body will stay in bed." The next thing he knew he had been yanked out of bed, dressed, driven, and was sitting in the church house. He looked at his mother and said, "Now my spirit is in bed!" How many times have we witness this truth, even with adults? Can you be with someone in spirit, when you really didn’t want to be there? The kind of worshipers Jesus is looking for, are those who are in worship in both spirit and truth. Let’s be present in body and spirit seeking His presence.

And he said to him, "Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound." But he became angry, and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began entreating him. Lk 15:27-18

The prodigal son had been on the "pig pin trail", and now he was home. Everyone was glad except his older brother, "Clipboard Clyde." Clyde had carefully kept track of his work, and brother’s failures. While Clyde was outside, the restored son enjoyed the party. That ends of the story, but what if it went one more day? What would Jesus want the forgiven son to do tomorrow? Jesus taught, "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." The forgiven and restored younger brother is the only person who can reach out to his brother. His personal expression of love and forgiveness can bring both brothers home. Don’t wait for Clyde to call. The call is ours.

Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a cock crowed. And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a cock crows you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly Mt 26:74-75

Peter’s denials of Jesus sent him away from Jesus and the rest of the apostles in shame. The devil had indeed sifted him like wheat. Now what would he do? If he allowed his anxiety to paralyze him, he could have joined Judas Iscariot, at the end of a rope. Instead, he yielded to the Lord’s invitation to meet Him at Galilee. That response brought him back to the Lord, and he would rise to preach the gospel. It is true what Proverbs says, anxiety does weigh us down, but a good word makes us glad. Many have been weighed down, but only a few have been made glad by the word. Which choice will we make today? Choose the glad word.

Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those w ho find it. Mt 7:13-14

When we enter into this life, the way is very narrow, but it is the only way in. The choice is not ours. Jesus taught us all that in order to enter the kingdom, we must be born again. Jesus further directed us that He was the only way in when He said, "No one comes to the Father, but by Me." That’s narrow, but it’s the only way in, and the choice is not ours. Someday when we stand before the judgment seat of God, and He looks for our name in the Book of Life, the standard of judgment will be narrow. We cannot and will not decide the terms of entrance. His Word will be the judge. May we quit thinking it is all up to us, and we can do whatever we want. Yield to His narrow way. It is the only way.

Little children, let us not love with word of with tongue, but in deed and truth. I John 3:18

A boy once said to a girl, "I love you with all my heart. I would climb the highest mountain, swim the deepest river, jump the widest chasm, fight the fiercest storm, and if I’m not too busy Saturday night, I might come and see you." Talk is cheap. The best expression of love is time and effort. If someone we really love is in the hospital, we find time to visit everyday, maybe all day. To others, the words of love come out of our mouths, but we never quite get there. When we are truthful about our love for someone, the rest of our body will soon follow. What did we say about our love for Jesus? Let's see your love soon!

And the one on whom see was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. Mt 13:22

In this parable, the seed that is sown in the word of God. It is seed that has the potential of bringing forth a great harvest, up to a hundred times more than sown. Other places it does not do as well. The soil with the thorns starts off pretty well, but later the crop is choked off and dies. How many times has this been repeated in the garden of God. He calls, we hear, we want to grow, but the opposition wins. Worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches are right in front of us, and the word is way over there somewhere. The word can be victorious in our lives, but we must overcome the weeds. Weed that garden right now.

Therefore the Jews of the rural areas, who live in the rural towns, make the fourteenth of Adar a holiday for rejoicing and feasting and sending portions of food to one another. Esther 9:19

In the time of Esther and Mordecai, the Jews scored a great victory in the world. Their lives were spared, their enemies were executed, their adversaries were converted, and they were being blessed. It was time to celebrate. The feast of Purim was started to celebrate and remember. The rested, ate, sent food to the needy, and rejoiced, thanking the Lord. In the church today, do we know how to rest and celebrate? We seem to spend all our time struggling and falling short in our mission. As we continue to fall short, our life is void of rest and celebration. Let’s start doing what God has directed, and then enjoy a little rejoicing and renewal to face our challenges tomorrow.

And the people answered and said, "Far be it from us, that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; Josh 24:16

Just before Joshua went to his grave, he challenged all Israel to be faithful to God and reject idols. They knew the right thing to say. They knew what Joshua expected and hoped they would answer. The spoke the words of faithfulness, but they did not mean it, nor live it. They did not reject idols, they rejected God. It brought about their destruction. Today in our churches, we know the words of faithfulness. We know what our leaders expect us to answer about our lives, and we speak those words to avoid confrontation. Do our lives prove that we mean the words? Do we live our testimony? If we reject the Lord, our words will profit us little. Let’s not just talk, let’s walk as well.

Seeing that His divine nature has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. II Pet 1:;3-4

We all know about our heavenly home, but do we realize that God has blessed us in this life as well? He has granted us all things for life and godliness, and has shared His very nature with us, so we can live above the corruption of the world. Knowing God is only part of those blessings. We can be participants with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and share all of His promises. May we enjoy the ride to our heavenly home.

And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, "Behold, My mother, and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister, and mother." Mt 12:49-50

There has always been lots of debate about the family of Jesus. Many religions elevate His mother to deity, and deny the existence of any brothers or sisters. Those around Jesus recognized His family on sight, but Jesus took this opportunity to expand His family to include us. When Jesus rose from the dead and become our mediator, He formed a new family. The family of God was opened to all obedient believers. Obeying Christ is the will of the Father. When we do it, we become children of God, and brothers and sisters with Jesus. Welcome to the royal family today.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you. I Pet 1:3-4

Have you ever known anyone who was "born with a silver spoon in their mouth?" That means they were fortunate enough to be born into a rich family. They had an inheritance waiting for them that they did not earn nor deserve. They don’t work for money, their money works for them. Our Christian heritage is just like that. We are born again with rich spiritual blessings we did not earn nor deserve. Our reservation is heaven will not perish nor fade away. Let’s start living like sons of the king.

tTherefore, thus will I do to you O Israel; because I shall do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel. Amos 4:12

Last week in Indiana, we had another ice storm. I saw a woman trying to scrape the ice off her windshield with a Tupperware lid. All day long I had seen people who were totally unprepared for this winter storm, but this was the topper. Had the missed all the warnings? Didn't they know it was winter? The warnings from God through Amos, was just a small piece of the many "storm" warnings God had sent His people. Time and time again, they ignored God and His prophets, and they would soon suffer the consequences. Is it time for us to heed His warnings before it is too late? Let’s not forgot who we are and where we are. May we get prepared to meet our God.

And when Philip had run up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Acts 8:30-31

What happens when an obedient disciple of Christ, meets someone with an open Bible, an open mind, and an open desire? Sadly, most people don’t know that answer to that question, nor will they ever have the experience. God has called us to be obedient disciples who are looking for those who are hungry for His righteousness. Can we read the signs? Because Philip was ready, he led this man to Jesus, and baptized him that very day. This man went on his way rejoicing because Philip was ready. Are we ready? Can anyone expect to go on their way rejoicing from us? Let's get ready.

And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment. Hebrew 9:27

Many people have become so overcome with the difficulties of this life, that they have decided to commit suicide. Their wish is to end it all. Can we end it all with our death? The answer is no, not at all. This body that we have is destined to die, but the spirit the living within us will never die. Death is the separation of our body and our spirit. When this physical journey ends, we begin an eternal journey to the judgment seat of Christ. God wants us to live a victorious life, and then enjoy the glory of an eternity with Him in heaven. Whether we choose victory in Jesus, or destruction with the devil, our death is change, not the end. Know someone who wants to end their misery? Lead them to Jesus.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. Gal 6:7

There is a teaching that comes in some religions called karma. Karma is a belief that we receive in accordance to the way we live. If we do good things, good things will happen to us. If we do bad things, we are destined to encounter bad times. Karma says our destiny is fixed and cannot be avoided. Is there a difference between karma and the biblical principle of sowing and reaping? Yes, and the difference is Jesus. Jesus can change our lives, and pay our debts in full. In Christ, we bear His righteousness and he bears our sins. Do not accept a destiny of doom. May we all allow His Spirit to change your future.

But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, "Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza." Acts 8:26

The day Philip got this message from the angel of the Lord to arise and go, what were his options? Was this a multiple choice challenge? Might he have chosen to say "no", or "maybe later", or "I’d like to pray about it first", or "send someone else?" The Spirit of God had communicated to him, Could there be options? When we open the word of God, we are exposed to God’s direction through the Spirit. When God’s word directs us to come to Him, then go make disciples, baptizing them, what are our options? Why is it that Philip had no options nor excuses, but we have plenty? May we allow God’s message to be personal for us, and do His will.
