I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God inChrist Jesus. Philippians 3:14

The prize in the gospel of Jesus Christ never lost its appeal to Paul and the early disciples. They endured trials and temptation to continue their quest to mature and grow in Christ Jesus. The more they were with it, the more they treasured it. When I was a little kid we yearned to get a box of Cracker Jacks. There was a prize inside that we just had to have and loved it. As we grew older, that prize in the box started to look like a piece of junk. This happens to many in Christ. The prize of Christ is glorious in the beginning, and then as we more forward, the shine comes off the prize. Soon we have cast it aside for something else. Let's hold onto that treasure, that pearl of great price. The best part of the prize is yet to come.

Grace for your spirit
For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. Natt 25:14-15

Through the grace given to us by God, in a way we are all the same, and in a way we are all different. We are all servants of the same master. We have all been entrusted with His possession while He is away. We will all be expected to give an account of our work with His possessions. The ways we are different is determined by the talents and gifts that we possess. In this story, one had five, one had two, and the last had one. In that sense they had different opportunities to serve. We all have different work, different gifts, but the same accountability. Let's put effort in our service rather than working on our excuses.

Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

Many people dedicate their lives to "climbing the ladder of success". Often in our zeal to reach the top, we use people as steps on the ladder. We don't serve people nor make many friends, but we're not concerned because the only goal is getting to the top. When we reach the top in this way, usually we find that our ladder has been leaning against the wrong building all the time. We find little joy and satisfaction in our goal. When we lean our ladder against the kingdom of God, our steps will be attained in service and caring of others. Keep looking up at the top of the ladder. We should see God, and our feet should be squarely in His Will. That is the real ladder of success.

Grace for your spirit
So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph, and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. John 4:5-6

Jesus traveled into enemy territory for anyone from Judea. His apostles left him alone as they went to find food. It a place where a man from Judea would be vulnerable, and the woman He met there that day was surprised. She was surprised to see Him, and even more surprised that He spoke to her. His rest was very productive. He taught this sinful woman about living water, and she went and brought the whole city out to meet Him. If we are going to be productive in leading souls to Christ, we often will have to go into enemy territory. We will have to make ourselves vulnerable and be brave to reach the lost for Jesus. It would be nice if they all would meet us at church, but they won't.

Grace for your spirit
On an appointed day Herod, having put on his royal apparel, took his seat on the rostrum and began delivering an address to them. The people kept crying out, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" Acts 12:21-22

Herod was a ruler in Israel, and his power and glory went to his head. The people flattered him for his royalty and power, so goodness would come to them instead of anger. A "god" was a title he could live with, or could he? While he was working against God's will, he himself was taking all the glory. That night he was stricken with worms and died. It was evident to the people that he was not a god, but just a man. The difference between Herod and God was, that God never thought he was Herod. May we never set ourselves up to be some sort of god. The long term results are always a disaster.
